Utility workWe've heard a lot of complaints over the last couple of days about utility work by Washington Gas on 7th Street SE. The work is being done right next to Eastern Market and has resulted in an asphalt patch being put down where new pavers had just been installed. Naturally, a lot of people were upset that the new streetscape and investment in 7th Street was being torn up so quickly. Our office (as well as many others) contacted DDOT to find out what's going on. The good news: the asphalt is only temporary and all the pavers will be replaced to make the street whole once again.

Here's the official response from DDOT:

Due to an unidentified gas leak detected near 7th Street, SE Washington Gas crews have found it necessary to cut into the newly paved roadway and pavers on 7th Street near Eastern Market.  DDOT has been notified of two cuts in the roadway necessary to make repairs.  Washington Gas crews are on site making repairs.  DDOT inspectors and contractors are aware of the situation and will make full roadway repairs including installation of new pavers once the gas leak work as been completed.  If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact Karyn Le Blanc at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
