Upcoming Job Fair for Baseball Stadium Operations

Cooks and accountants, bus drivers and ticket sellers, ushers and custodians and lots of other types of jobs will be available for those coming to the Job Fair at the Greenleaf Recreation Center, First and M Street, SW, Saturday, February 9, 2008, from 10 am - 2pm.  A follow up  job fair will be held on Thursday, February 21 at the same location on First and M Street, SW during the same hours. For those traveling by subway, the Waterside Mall green line is a couple of blocks away.

Resumes may be helpful for applicants to be able to refer to during interviews, but are not necessary.  There will be employers looking to hire staff for parking, catering services, security, maintenance and cleaning, guest services and many other positions.  Most employers will interview and enter your verbal information into a database, while the Nationals will want your basic information and what areas you are interested in being considered for their guest services positions.  The catering company will want a short application completed.

Persons ages 18 and above, including senior citizens are encouraged to apply.  Most positions are part-time and seasonal.  However, many of the employers have contracts for providing services at other entertainment sites such as the Convention Center, Verizon Center and Fed Ex Field who may make year-long work available to these staff at these other job sites if they are interested in working beyond the baseball season.

While open to everyone, the diverse population of Ward 6 is especially appealing to the Nationals as they are more likely to live closer to the stadium, and are less likely to need parking.  The pressure to provide adequate parking for fans makes this a favorable job selection opportunity for workers who do not need to drive to work  Residents with police records should also apply, as there will be many positions where a criminal record will not be a problem.  Also, residents who have little work experience, but are reliable and willing workers will be considered for positions for which they have acquired the needed skills during their lifetime.  Mothers with children may find the part time work fits their family schedules while allowing them to earn extra money.  Seniors on fixed incomes may want to supplement their income and enjoy the interaction with people while working in an exciting place.

Many residents in the ballpark neighborhood have watched the building of the stadium over the past several years and while enduring the construction and street closure issues, hoped that one day they could work there and walk to work from their nearby homes.  The Near SW/SE Community Benefits Coordinating Committee (CBCC), a coalition of the ANC 6D, the South West Neighborhood Assembly and other civic and tenant associations, churches, and non-profit organizations in the near SW and SW neighborhoods around the stadium have mounted an outreach effort to recruit and assist residents in this area to get engaged and ready to participate in the Stadium Job Fairs.

For long term career development and training of residents, the CBCC has formed another coordinating effort with the guidance and support of Tommy Wells -- working to create a Community Center in Near SW/SE that will include as its initial priority a comprehensive workforce development program to include necessary support services for all residents of these neighborhoods. This second group includes the CBCC leadership, supported by DOES, UPO, Southeastern University, the South Washington Family Strengthening Collaborative,  the SW Waterfront Developer - PN Hoffman/Stubbert, Tommy Wells’ Community Liaison staff and others as needed as the planning moves forward. Committees of the Community Center/Workforce Development Committee are being filled by a broad range of residents from the community.

I am very interest in working at the stadium. I am glad that the city is giving people this opportunity. Plus, it is convenient to metro. I would like to know, if all the positions happen to get filled at the new stadium, will you have other employers their that will be hiring (other affiliates)?
