The Hill Center plan yesterday received the recommendation of the public/private panel convened by D.C. Office of Property Management to restore and renovate the Old Naval Hospital and make it vital part of the community.  This is the first step toward their plans to transform the Old Naval Hospital and turn it into vibrant community center for lifelong learning and cultural enrichment.  “This handsome building has languished too long in decay,” said Councilmember Wells.   He added, “I am so pleased that we will finally be able take advantage of this rich amenity for the enjoyment of all of Ward.”

In addition to taking responsibility for the interior and exterior repair work, the Hill Center designs include adding an elevator, two additional interior fire stairs, extensive restoration of the grounds and also plans to convert the carriage house into a family friendly café.   Work is expected to take one year after the necessary permits and approvals have been secured.  Once the structural work has been completed, the Hill Center will partner with neighborhood organizations to offer wide ranging educational opportunities for all ages, including classes in languages, music, painting, writing, art, parenting, cooking and more.  Space will also be offered as lodging for community organizations and available for rent for local meetings, lectures receptions and other neighborhood functions.

Hill Center plan was created by the Old Naval Hospital Foundation a 501(c)(3) organization made up of long-time local residents from all walks of life, who have been working for over five years soliciting ideas with established community organizations through direct resident contact, including conducting an online survey. To date the Old Naval Hospital Foundation has raised over two million dollars toward an endowment to help support the Center’s operations. Hill Center still must await final approval from OPM who will make the decision after all public comment has been received and reviewed.  D.C. Office of Property Management will hold a public meeting on the recommendation at the Old Naval Hospital Thursday July 19, 7:00 pm.
