The tragedy of yesterday’s Metrorail collision has hit close to home for Ward 6. It was shared today that Retired Commanding General David F. Wherley and his wife, Ann, as well as DCPS teacher Dennis Hawkins, were three of the nine casualties. All three were Ward 6 residents. Major General Wherley was the commanding officer of the DC National Guard at the DC Armory and he and his wife lived near Lincoln Park. Mr. Dennis Hawkins was a DCPS teacher and lived in Hill East. “I am deeply saddened by the loss of these three great individuals. Our community knew them as neighbors, teachers, mentors, and leaders within our armed forces. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends,” commented Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells.
