Believe it or not, it’s finally happening: The Market is reopening in its original location and with its original splendor and more! Many of us who have lived here for more than a few years thought this day would never come. Over the years the fate of the Market has been discussed, debated and disputed - and then, in the end, nothing ever changed. It continued to operate in the same fashion falling further into disrepair. Then came the devastating fire in April 2007 and we all knew something had to be done. I don’t know if it was the shock of the fire or the very real fear that we might in fact lose the Market. Whatever it was, the neighborhood rallied together and we set off on the course to restore the Market, post-haste. Mayor Fenty put all of the city’s resources behind the project and the community, heck- the world, offered every kind of support needed from money to prayers. Now, little more than two years later, it has all come to fruition. The Market is better than ever. All the upgrades have been made to bring the magnificent structure into the 20th century while such attention to detail has guaranteed that the original interior color will again grace the inside of the Market. The grand re-opening is this Friday June 26th at 10:30 am with a formal ribbon cutting by the Mayor, Councilmember Tommy Wells and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. That is to be followed by a day of festivities at the Market on Saturday June 27th from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm with music, family activities, Market tours and a special historical exhibit in the North Hall and more. We’ll see you at the Market!
