The interns are coming, the interns are coming, thank God, almighty, the interns are coming. Part of my job here with the Committee on Human Services is to supervise our interns. What a great opportunity it is to be able to help Motivate, Educate and Empower our young men and women. Currently, we have three interns who are attending college (from UDC, George Washington and from North Carolina) and a young man who Councilman Wells has been a mentor to for many years. We are also expecting two summer youth from the Department of Employment Services bringing us a grand total of 6 interns.
Our interns will be assisting staff with planning and promoting community events, helping to organize information for hearings, working on legislation, assisting with constituent issues, attending community meetings and meeting community leaders. This process of preparing to supervise has already assisted me in learning more about the District Government. In order to supervise them I was required to get a police clearance, needless to say I was knocking on a number of doors, speaking with numerous people trying to get to the right office to have my paperwork submitted and to get fingerprinted. Fortunately, I did not make America’s Most Wanted, but I still would like to meet John Walsh. Having gone through all of this, we here in Councilman Wells office are better able to serve and give these young people a good education in District Government.
