Ward 6 has lost a great friend and longtime leader for progressive ideals and DC self-determination. Last Tuesday night, Richard Rausch died quietly from complications of his recent illness. Richard, a long-term Ward 6 resident, founded and/or led most of the progressive organizations of our city, including the Ward 6 Democrats, Gertrude Stein Democratic Club, DC State Democratic Party, Americans for Democratic Action – DC Chapter, and was a tireless worker in many local and national political campaigns. Richard used his sharp wit and wisdom to guide city leaders as he pointedly made his principled opinions clear -- earning iconic status for many of us in DC's Democratic Party.
I often marveled at Richard’s devotion to his friends, and felt lucky to be counted among them for more than 20 years. We will all miss his late night calls, frequent postcard mailings, and undying commitment to turn people out for the causes he held dear. Tommy Wells

I would like to know if there is a Memorial Service being planned - I would certainly try to attend. (2) Untitled 2007-06-06 11:27:43 Richard was a true friend, activist and devoted to progressive change for the District of Columbia and the nation. Although I'm currently living most of the time in Pennsylvania, I will always remember his humor and his contributions to our city.
