Meet Tommy Wells Mayoral Campaign Chair, Mai Fernandez

Mai Fernandez lives in Washington DC with her husband and son, who next year will be enrolled in a DC public school. Mai is the Executive director of the National Center for Victims of Crime, a DC-based non-profit that for nearly 30 years has advocated for crime victims across the United States, including those in Washington DC.


Since 1985, Mai (pronounced 'MY') has spent the bulk of her career in Washington DC, including 13 years running the community-based organization the Latin American Youth Center. The Center is a DC-based nonprofit providing vital health and afterschool programs, mentoring and housing for underserved DC youth.


Mai has worked at the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, and served as a Congressional aide to U.S. Representatives Mickey Leland and Jim Florio. She served as Assistant District Attorney for New York County.


She was the Founding Chair of the Police Complaint Board in DC, creating a citizen-friendly process for resolving complaints against DC metro police officers.


Mai holds a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University's JFK School of Government, and received her Juris Doctor from American University.
